This gives the visitor of the Web page detailed information about the applet as it is loaded. Thus, giving the visitor more than just a "gray" box while the applet is loading.
It's a good thing this applet so courteously keeps you updated-loading progress is displayed graphically with a red bar as well as with a numerical countdown-because it takes a long time. Though perhaps this is the point. And the cloudy sky effect is cool.

Here's another Java creation that's way cool but takes forever to load on a 28.8 modem. Also, the demo brings up several floating applet windows in addition to the animated graphs on the main page, so you'll have to move from item to item unless you have a much larger than average monitor.

Also, this javatisement (to coin a term) features random gull cries (complete with a minor audio glitch that SOX seems to always create).
The applet source code, thread classes for the gulls and the rain, and the class that defines the raindrops are all available via this site. Also, don't neglect the Scramble Game if you're using Windows. A hint, however: If you're not a programmer, you'll have an extra challenge on your hands.
