10 Minute Guide to Schedule+ for Windows 95

- Lesson 1 -
Starting and Exiting Schedule+

In this lesson, you will learn how to start, log on to, and exit Schedule+. You also learn how to change your logon password.

Starting Schedule+

To begin working with Schedule+, you first have to start the

program. To start Schedule+, follow these steps:

1. Open the Start menu from the Windows 95 taskbar by clicking on the Start button.

2.
From the Start menu, click on Programs.

3.
In the Programs menu, select Microsoft Schedule+ to open the application (Figure 1.1).

Other Ways to Open Schedule+ You can also launch Schedule+ from the Windows Explorer by double-clicking on the Schedule+ executable file in the Schedule+ folder. Or open Schedule+ from the My Computer window by opening the drive and folder containing the program and double-clicking on the Schedule+ icon.

Logging On with the Logon Box

The first thing you see when you start Schedule+ is a logon box. You see a logon box every time you open Schedule+. Depending on whether or not you are on a network (connected to other computers), your computer may show different logon boxes. If youíre networked (and you share e-mail on the network with other

users), you use a group-enabled mode box. If youíre not connected to a computer network, you use a stand-alone mode box as shown in Figure 1.2.

Using Group-Enabled Mode The first time you open Schedule+, you have the option of using the program in group-enabled or stand-alone mode. If youíre using Schedule+ on a network, be sure to select group-enabled mode. If you select the Donít ask me this question again check box, you wonít be able to switch to another mode unless you reinstall Schedule+.

Why go to the trouble of using a logon box? Because the things you keep in your Schedule+ program may be personal or private, and you may not want everyone to have access to your schedule. Logon names and passwords help you keep your data safe. Logon boxes are also useful if several people use the same computer. For example, if you use Schedule+ at home, other members of your family can set up and open their own schedules through the logon box.

Here are instructions for handling the logon modes:

  • In group-enabled mode, type your name in the Profile name text box, type in your password (if assigned one), and click OK.

  • In stand-alone mode, type your name in the User name text box, type in your password (if assigned one), and click OK.

If you logged onto Schedule+ previously and created a schedule, the logon box may already display your user name when you log on again.

The first time you create a schedule, the Schedule+ welcome box appears, as shown in Figure 1.3. (This box also appears when the program cannot find a schedule you previously created.)

Figure 1.3 The welcome box has two options you can choose.

  • To create a new schedule, select the I want to create a new schedule file option and click OK.

  • To open a schedule, select the I want to use an existing schedule file option and click OK.

Either method opens the Select Local Schedule dialog box, shown in Figure 1.4. You use this dialog box to locate schedules or to simply confirm information about your new schedule, such as its name and location.

Figure 1.4 The Select Local Schedule dialog box.

  • To confirm information about a new schedule, click on the Save button. If you want to save the schedule in another location, select a folder from the Save in drop-down list.

  • To look for an existing schedule, use the Save in drop-down list to locate the folder containing the schedule. Once you find the schedule, select it and click on the Open button.

How Do I Start a New Schedule? If you share your computer with other people, such as family members, you probably want to know how to start new schedules for each user. To start a new schedule, you type a new logon name in the Schedule+ Logon dialog box. This sets up a schedule for the additional user that he or she can personally fill in.

Once you make it past the logon box and the startup procedure, your personal Schedule+ screen appears in full as shown in Figure 1.5.

The Schedule+ screen contains all the familiar Windows elements youíve worked with before in other Windows programs. (Youíll learn all about the parts of the Schedule+ screen in the next lesson.)

Setting Up Passwords

Passwords are a common feature of many computers and computer programs today. They help keep your data safe by only allowing users who know the password to access your files. You can set up a password for everyone who uses the Schedule+ program. If you use Schedule+ in a network environment, your network administrator may have already assigned you a password; however, you can change your password at any time.

To create or change a password for your Schedule+ program, perform the following steps:

1. Open the Tools menu and select Change Password.

2.
In the Change Password dialog box, shown in Figure 1.6, type in a password.

3.
Confirm the password by retyping it in the Verify new password text box.

4.
Click OK. Schedule+ sets up the program with your new password.

You have to use the new password to log back onto the Schedule+ program. Be sure to remember your password, or write it down and keep it somewhere safe.

Exiting Schedule+

Although youíre not ready to quit Schedule+ yet, you might as well learn how to exit it so youíre ready when the time comes. To exit Schedule+, you can use any of these methods:

  • Open the File menu and select Exit.

  • Click on the Close button.

  • Double-click on the programís Control-menu icon.

  • Press Alt+F4.

Unlike many other programs you use, you donít have to take steps to save your data with Schedule+. It automatically saves your data when you exit the program.

In this lesson, you learned how to start Schedule+, to use the logon box and set your password, and to exit the program. In the next lesson, youíll learn how to navigate the Schedule+ screen.
