HTML 4.0 Sourcebook
Acknowledgments
No book (particularly one as comprehensive as this) is written in a vacuum, and I have many friends to thank for their roles in keeping the vacuum comfortably populated. First, I must thank Kelly Peters, my coauthor for Chapter 5. Kellys infectious enthusiasm for all things Web was a constant reminder that, indeed, this material is of interest to someone other than me. In addition, her perspectivethat of a professional webmaster at Canadas largest Web siteprovided a useful counterpoint to my academic experience and sensibilities! Second, I must thank Michael Lee, who researched the material on Web development resources such as link checkers, server log analyzers, and GUIbased imagemap editors. Unfortunately, much of this material did not make it into printit is instead available on the supporting Web site. And, as far as I am concerned, that makes it as much a part of the book as the page you are now reading! Many others made contributions for which I am truly grateful. In particular, I would like to thank Norman Wilson, for designing the programs listen.c and backtalk.c, and also for his helpful and concise reviews of chapters from previous editions. John Bradley and Sian Meikle were kind enough to review early drafts of Chapter 4, and their feedback helped improve the chapter enormously. In the same vein, I must thank Steve Rapaport, who proofread an early version of Chapter 3 and helped clarify some of my more confusing rants! And, of course, I must thank all my friends and coworkers at Groveware Inc., the Centre for Academic Technology at the University of Toronto, and University of Toronto Computing, whose friendship over these past months helped make the whole effort possible. But most of all, I thank my wife, Ann, for her love, patience, and support throughout the long writing process. And now that it is finishedI promise to clean the basement!
